Asking for Antibiotics

We get so many requests via the prescription line (0141 207 7485) for antibiotics to treat viral illnesses such as sore throat, cough, head cold and flu like symptoms ...

Doctors will not leave antibiotics unless the patient is seen by doctor, examined and the result of that examination suggests that an antibiotic is indicated.

So many of these conditions are viral and antibiotics have absolutely no effect whatsoever. Simple measure like paracetamol (2 tabs every 4-6 hours maximum) and plenty fluids will keep the patient comfortable until the effects of the virus ease.

Obviously if the patient is a young child and the condition is not improving then we really do need to see the child but healthy adults do not require antibiotics for viral conditions. Please do not be offended if you are refused antibiotics - the doctor really does know best! Antibiotics should only be used where there is an infection, over use of antibiotics causes resistance.

If you do have flu like symptoms the best advice is to go to bed, keep warm, take paracetamol and drink plenty fluids.
